Engine and transmission

The new 2019 Toyota Camry is built on the global modular platform TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture). The overall dimensions of the sedan are 4,859, 1,838 and 1,440 mm in length, width and height, respectively. The wheelbase is 2,824 millimeters, and the trunk volume according to the American EPA standard is stated at 428 liters.

The design of the model actively uses high-strength steel, which increases the rigidity of the body. In addition, the Japanese note that the Toyota Camry 70 has a lower center of gravity. The car received a new rear double-wishbone suspension, which replaced McPherson struts, while the ground clearance was reduced to 145 mm (-10).



The line of power units for the new Camry XV70 is represented by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated A25A-FKS with a combined fuel injection system into the intake manifold and directly into the cylinders. The output of such a unit is 206 hp. and 249 Nm, and on the XSE version - 209 forces and 252 Nm. Under light loads, the engine can switch to the economical Atkinson cycle, consuming 7.4 liters of fuel per 100 km in mixed mode.

The four-door can also be ordered with an upgraded 3.6-liter V6 engine, which now also has combined fuel injection and the compression ratio has been increased to 11.8:1 instead of the previous 10.8:1. The output of such an engine increased to 305 hp. and 362 Nm, while average fuel consumption was reduced to 9.0 liters per hundred.

Both engines are paired with an eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, but the gearbox has different gear ratios for each unit. In the USA and Japan, the model also has a hybrid modification.

The latter's power plant consists of a new 2.5-liter gasoline engine, derated to 178 horsepower, and an electric motor with 143 horsepower. (270 Nm). The total output of the units is 211 “horses”. In the basic version of the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the electric motor receives energy from a 1.04 kWh lithium-ion battery, and in the top version it is powered by a 1.6 kWh metal hydride battery.

Exterior

The new Toyota Camry 2019 can boast of two versions at once. Versions L, LE and XLE have a more relaxed exterior design with a wide “mouth” of the radiator grille spanning the entire width of the front bumper, while SE and XSE cars received more complex front plastics with air intakes, as well as a developed sports body kit.

According to the Japanese, modifications can be distinguished from each other even at a distance of more than 100 meters. At the front of the sedan there is a massive two-piece radiator grille. Its lower part, depending on the design, has either pronounced horizontal ribs or a fine-mesh structure.

The upper part of the grille, with the brand logo emblazoned in the center, resembles outstretched wings. In the L, LE and XLE versions, the tips of these “wings” merge into LED headlights, which are included in the equipment of even the basic version of the sedan.

In addition, the new Toyota Camry 2019 model year has a muscular hood with pronounced edges, and from the side the car pleases the eye with a dynamic profile with a “sagging” window sill line and a sloping roof, which makes the four-door look a little like a liftback.

By default, 16-inch wheels are installed on sedan wheels, while more expensive versions have 19-inch wheels. In general, the car in the new body has become noticeably more aggressive and sportier than its predecessor, while retaining its signature features.

Once inside the cabin of the new Camry V70, the asymmetrical center console, the complex lines of which conventionally separate the driver and passenger seats, immediately catches your eye.

At the top of the center console, the Japanese placed horizontal ventilation deflectors, under which there is a screen for the third generation Etune multimedia system. The machines have a 7.0-inch touchpad as standard, while more expensive versions have a 8.0-inch display. As an option, you can even order a 10-inch head-up display on the windshield.

The interior decoration is dominated by expensive materials and soft plastic. The design itself differs from version to version. On the Asian version, there are wood-effect inserts on the front panel and central tunnel.

In the USA, it is customary to measure interior volume, here it turned out to be 2.84 cubic meters (-0.07). The distance between the rows has decreased by 23 mm, so it is possible that tall passengers will be less comfortable here than in the cabin of its predecessor.

New Toyota Camry 2018 decided to make it common for all markets. If previously the USA produced its own version, Japan its own, and Europe a third version of the sedan, now the manufacturer has decided to unite all modifications of the model under the common index V70. Let us remind you that Toyota Camry in the V50 body is now being produced in Russia.

By the end of 2017, the launch of production of Camry in the new body is planned in Japan, Thailand and China. In the USA, the Camry V70 began production in the summer. Most likely, the new product will reach Russia in 2018, and maybe in 2019. The car is based on a completely new modular platform TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), or rather its mid-size version GA-K. The large volume of use of high-strength steel made it possible to increase the rigidity of the body while reducing its weight. The model received a completely new rear multi-link suspension.

As for the exterior of the Camry 2018, in each market, of course, the models will have small features in optics and the shape of the bumpers, but in principle the design has become global for all countries. Let’s say right away that the model will be produced with two types of front end – regular and “charged” versions of the exterior. The difference can be seen in our photographs below.

New generation Camry salon experienced simply revolutionary changes. The designers decided to create a completely original interior from scratch, which competitors had never even dreamed of. The central console is generally a unique element of the interior in terms of its layout. The combination of light plastic, wood and polished aluminum with asymmetrical shapes allows you to look at the functionality of the model from a different perspective. It is useless to describe it, you need to look at the photographs. As for the completely new seats, they have a very comfortable shape and are extremely comfortable. By the way, because of this, the internal volume of the cabin has decreased slightly, although the wheelbase has increased.

When creating a new generation of sedan, engineers decided to make the car more sporty and did serious work on the suspension, chassis and steering. The new power structure of the body made it possible to lower the center of gravity of the car, even the seats in the cabin were installed lower. At the same time, ground clearance was affected. So on American cars the ground clearance decreased from 155 to 145 mm, what will happen to the Russian version is not yet clear.

The popular 2.5-liter gasoline engine of the 2AR-FE series has been retired; instead, the Camry will be equipped with the latest 4-cylinder 16-valve A25A-FKS of the same volume. The new engine received electric phase shifters on both camshafts, the compression ratio in the cylinders was increased to 13:1, combined injection appeared (into the intake manifold and into the cylinders), in addition, the engine control system can adjust its operation to the economical Atkinson cycle. As a result, the average fuel consumption was reduced, and the naturally aspirated power was increased to 209 hp. at 252 Nm of torque.

The top-end 6-cylinder naturally aspirated engine has also undergone a major modernization. Now the 3.5-liter V6 has received the index 2GR-FKS and develops 305 hp. at 362 Nm. As a result of increasing the compression ratio and the use of new phase shifters with an increased valve timing angle, it was possible to reduce average fuel consumption.

Naturally, there will also be a hybrid modification of the sedan with a derated 2.5-liter engine and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1.04 kW/h. Most likely, the hybrid will not reach our country soon.

As for the transmission, as before, the Camry has front-wheel drive with a transverse power unit. Instead of a 6-band hydromechanical automatic transmission, the latest 8-speed automatic transmission will now be installed.

Prices and options for Toyota Camry 2018

Prices have so far been announced only for the American market. The basic version with a 2.5 liter engine in North America has risen in price by only $425. The minimum price of the new product is $23,495. The hybrid version will cost a minimum of $27,800, and the top version with a powerful V6 engine sells for $34,400. It’s too early to talk about prices and configurations for Russia.

The Camry in the XV70 body came to Russia in 2017, late compared to the rest of the world. To say that they were waiting for our car would be an understatement. Of course, the well-known and popular Camry no longer looks like a car from 20 years ago, it has become slimmer, prettier, and more aggressive. In addition, test drives of cars from other countries showed that its driving properties have also changed. The Camry is no longer an unmanageable barge. It is not surprising that immediately after the start of sales, the demand for new generation cars went through the roof. It was such that the expensive sedan managed to get into the top 10 best-selling cars on the Russian market. But then the first owners began to talk about their operating experience and the enthusiasm subsided. Moreover, even experienced drivers began to express the opinion that they would rather ride on their own than change to a new one. Why didn't everyone like it so much?

1. Cost of original spare parts

Of course, no one expects a business class car to be as cheap to maintain as a Lada, but prices for some Camry spare parts are frankly scary. How do you like a front bumper for 50-70 thousand rubles, rear lights for 65 thousand rubles or mud flaps for 10 thousand rubles (and a car costing 1.5-2.5 million rubles does not have mud flaps from the factory!). But that’s okay, at least there are non-original spare parts for such spare parts, you don’t have to feed Toyota and the dealer with crazy overpayments. What should owners of cars with LED optics do? A new set of headlights costs almost 200 thousand rubles, and there are no substitutes. Is it normal for headlights to cost 10% of a new car? We think not.

Well, yes, Toyota’s favorite service interval of 10 thousand kilometers, which shakes out a lot of money from owners, has been preserved.

2. Inconvenient trunk release button

In terms of opening the trunk, Toyota engineers turned out to be conservative - there is a special button on the lid that activates the electric lock: press it and open it. But I wonder if any of the engineers tried to open the trunk on a real car. On the real one, in the sense of a number frame and a sign. They cover a good half of the button, leaving a small piece accessible for pressing. You have to feel the button, press it with your nails, press it with something. This is a good example of how you can create inconvenience for owners out of the blue.

3. Space in the cabin

Nowadays, all cars are developing towards increasing sizes, both overall and interior, so it’s even somehow surprising that the Camry XV70 The amount of space for rear passengers has decreased. No, it hasn’t become cramped, the knees don’t support the seats, and the width of three people can still fit, but there’s no mega-spaciousness, although it’s precisely in terms of free space that the Camry has always been ahead of its competitors in the class. And now he’s giving in. Again, for some reason, the central tunnel suddenly expanded noticeably in width and height. The third passenger already has to sit with his legs wide apart.

Along with the rear row, the trunk space has also decreased. He is also not tiny even in this version, but it’s not clear why suddenly. The length of the XV70 is not inferior to previous bodies, how did the engineers manage to squander the advantages?

The luggage compartment volume is 493 liters, which is 13 liters less than the Camry XV50.

4. Interior materials

Although Camry has changed a lot in this generation, in some things the engineers remained true to tradition. We are talking about interior finishing materials. With not the highest quality plastic and rubbing upholstery the seats, it seems, everyone had already resigned themselves, but then a new misfortune arrived - piano varnish on the multimedia system. The new dashboard turned out nice, you can’t argue with that, but it needs to be wiped at least once a day. Every fingerprint, every speck of dust and hair is clearly visible on the head unit - a very impractical solution for a car.

5. Ride is sacrificed for handling

A very energy-intensive suspension has always been the calling card of the Camry. The car steered poorly and leaned heavily in corners, but it was possible to race without having to worry about the road. In the XV70, engineers decided to instill a sporty touch in the chassis, the car became much more obedient on the road, its feedback improved, the sway disappeared, the reactions became sharper, the number of steering wheel turns from lock to lock was reduced, but at the same time the suspension became noticeably stiffer. It transmits irregularities into the cabin and shakes passengers. The energy intensity has not changed, the suspension is still not penetrable, you still have to try to compress it on the rebound, but the smoothness of the ride is unmatched by cars of previous generations.

This castling may seem like a blessing to some, but to us it seems like a disadvantage. There are plenty of driving cars on the market, but few people place an emphasis on comfort. In the new generation the Camry will do the same. Consider this a stereotype, but a significant portion of Camry owners still drive in the back seat rather than behind the wheel. For them, the new suspension is definitely a disadvantage.

The new suspension has one more drawback - it often knocks on uneven surfaces in the cold. The owners on the specialized forum, through trial and error, came to the conclusion that the problem is in, this is their feature even in good condition. There is no point in fighting with the dealer to get them replaced under warranty, because they will replace them with the same ones anyway.

6. Windshield creaking

This is generally an anecdotal story. Many Camry XV70 owners experience a creaking sound in the area where the ceiling and windshield meet when it gets colder, and the colder it is outside, the stronger the creaking. You can hear it even on new cars, which allows us to talk not about “fatigue” of the interior, but about some other problems. Owners en masse go for service under warranty; dealers, to their credit, do not refuse repairs. The repair, however, takes about three minutes. The mechanics use a screwdriver to move a piece of roof lining to the side and take out two plastic clips from under it. These roofing felt clips are made of low-quality plastic, or are poorly placed, but when cold weather sets in, they begin to rub against the upholstery and cause squeaking.

The funny thing is that these details are not changed, but rather removed. And this has absolutely no effect on the windshield, the roof, or anything else. That is, the factory uses some dubious elements that not only cause problems, but are also not particularly needed in the design. Russian assembly, please love and favor.

Camry has a very controversial generation. Marketers and engineers decided to change the car, make it more youthful, and attract a new audience for which traditional Camrys have always been boring and uninteresting. On the one hand, it worked out - it looks fresh and drives much tastier than its predecessors. But experienced Camry owners for the most part did not like the changes. Reducing space in the cabin, deteriorating ride quality - at this rate the Camry will lose those qualities for which everyone loves it. The mechanical reliability of the basic units still remains high, and this is encouraging, but the number of minor defects and jambs is already annoying many. It seems that this is how cars lose market position, simply with the change of generations.

All vibration isolation is already pre-cut before the car arrives by appointment and heated in special custom ovens to 50-55 degrees. Therefore, it takes us about an hour and a half to roll the material to the floor in the cabin and in the trunk. Comfort mat Ultra Loker 4.2 carries the Auto-Loker logo on board and is manufactured individually on a separate conveyor only for our special center as the flagship Comfort mat throughout Russia. The material has a thickness of 4.2 mm, two layers of foil (!!!) and unprecedented efficiency with proper rolling. This is our pride and our flagship. It must be placed hot.

Once the spray joint sealant dries completely, it turns into rubber with incredible adhesion. You won't be able to tear out even a scrap of material. Everything is so tightly bound by polymer. Before installation, the standard fender liner itself is treated with thin and elastic Comfort mat Fusion foam rubber, which is 100% moisture resistant. We install the fender liner back in its place.
