Weaknesses of Great Wall Hover X5

  • Body;
  • Windscreen wipers;
  • Gas tank;
  • Trunk;
  • Engines;
  • Transmission;
  • Ride quality;
  • Salon.

The body is covered with a thin layer of paint. It does not protect it well enough from scratches and chips. The car quickly loses its original appearance. Cracks and areas of chipped paint appear on the body. They can be hidden. To do this, it is necessary to treat the defect with a special agent and paint over it.

Iron is not resistant to corrosion. Reagents that are used on roads in winter have a negative impact on the condition of the body. Especially the trunk lid, wheel arches, door trim, etc. The car quickly becomes covered with rust. In this case, additional treatment with an anti-corrosion agent will help.

Windscreen wipers

Glass cleaners– the weak link of the Hover X5. They quickly fail in winter. Experts do not recommend using them until the vehicle is completely warmed up. Otherwise, their quality of work will be low and they will need to be replaced with new ones.

The lock installed on the gas tank cap does not work - a problem that many Great Wall Hover H5 owners face. When it rains, water penetrates the device and it begins to rust. Corrosion negatively affects the quality of the lock. Over time, it completely fails. To prevent this, it is necessary to periodically treat the unit with a water-repellent preparation. For example, WD-40.

The trunk has a flaw. It touches the lid seal, which after a while begins to let water through. The problem can be eliminated by treating it with silicone.

The most popular among car enthusiasts are cars with two-liter diesel and 2.4-liter gasoline engines. The second one has a timing belt drive. It requires special attention. The belt must be replaced after 65 thousand km. If this requirement is not comply, the unit will fail. The belt will break and the valves will be damaged.

Cars assembled in Russia have one serious drawback - the cylinder head bolts are not tightened properly. If you don't know about this, then over time it will be necessary to change the cylinder block gaskets. Gasoline engines are sensitive to fuel quality. The service life of the pump, lambda probes, and crankshaft sensors depends on this.

Diesel units are reliable. If they are properly maintained, they will last a long time. It is necessary to change the oil and fuel filter in a timely manner. The manufacturer recommends doing this every 7 thousand km. The service life of glow plugs is 70 thousand km, the life of injectors is 110 thousand km. An increase in oil consumption is a sign of failure of the intake manifold. This problem usually occurs no earlier than 100 thousand km.

The manual transmission is the weak point of the Hover X5. Problems often arise with its operation. Many owners complain about noise during operation and roughness when shifting gears. Breakdowns occur after a mileage of 80 thousand km. Shaft bearings are the first to fail. The repairs will cost a substantial amount - about 40 thousand rubles.

Shaft seals also require attention. Especially when the car’s mileage reaches 70 thousand km. They can present an unpleasant surprise. The clutch service life is more than 100 thousand km during normal use.

The automatic transmission is reliable. It has no flaws and does not break during operation. It lasts a long time and works well. But there are quite a few cars with such a transmission in our country.

Chassis

The Great Well Hover X5 suspension is not very comfortable, but it lasts a long time. The first problems with it arise no earlier than 70 thousand km. Shock absorbers, support bearings, and ball joints become unusable. They need to be replaced with new ones. Other parts last longer. For example, silent blocks, struts, stabilizer bushings, wheel bearings. They are capable of traveling up to 100 thousand km. Experts advise tightening the suspension every 80 thousand km.

As for the brakes, the installation of new brake pads is necessary after 15 thousand km of the front and 35 thousand km of the rear. In this case, the calipers must be lubricated. Otherwise they will jam.

There are no complaints about the steering rack. Notes on the power steering pump. Its resource is small and it is necessary to install a new one every 110 thousand km. The procedure will cost 10 thousand rubles. Some craftsmen can save money and replace only the bearing.

Budget materials are used for interior decoration. Their quality is low, so they quickly lose their original appearance. This is especially noticeable on the steering wheel and seats. Their coating will peel off after 60 thousand km. Crickets are a car sore. There are more of them with the arrival of cold weather, in the winter season. Unpleasant sounds are produced by the door trim and seat fastenings installed at the rear. Dealing with them is not easy, and sometimes even impossible. That's why many drivers put up with them and don't notice them.

The main disadvantages of Great Wall Hover H5

  1. Weak light from low beam lamps;
  2. Poor sound insulation;
  3. The body is rusting in some places;
  4. Weak dynamics;
  5. Unreliable gearbox.

Bottom line.

Great Val Hover X5 is a good car for little money. The average cost of an SUV on the market is 500 thousand rubles. It is able to please its owner with excellent maneuverability, reliability and ease of maintenance. Most shortcomings are easily eliminated, and weak points do not cause much trouble.

P.S. Dear car owners, we ask you very much, if you have identified systematic breakdowns of any components, assemblies or parts of this car model, please report them in the comments below. We will jointly keep statistics on frequent malfunctions and shortcomings.

Weaknesses, advantages and main disadvantages of the Great Wall Hover X5 was last modified: July 1, 2019 by Administrator

The Great Wall Hover H5 SUV was first presented to the public in 2010. As with the H3 version, the car turned out to be another interpretation of the full-size Hover frame from 2005.

The car appeared on the Russian market in two thousand and eleven. Our model was received quite warmly, so its assembly was soon localized. At the moment, the cars are assembled at the Circassian plant Derways, and the SUVs produced here are sold as DW Hower H5.

Exterior

On the outside, the new Great Wall Hover H5 2017-2018 () is in many ways similar to the younger Ash3, however, if the latter has a rather aggressive “face” with a massive chrome grille, the “five” has received a softer and more modern decor.

At the front, the pre-reform version has a miniature radiator grille, the design of which resembles a bird spreading its wings. Plus, the original car has slanting headlights, as if drawn according to a pattern, as well as a compact bumper with a “smiling” central air intake.

During the restyling, the designers noticeably changed the design of the H5 front end. From now on, the SUV received not only a new radiator grille with three chrome fins, but also other wide-open headlights.
The front bumper has also been replaced - it has become noticeably more angular and muscular, and also received a solid silver protective trim on the bottom.

From the side, the Hover H5 in the new body has a classic off-road silhouette. The model is memorable for its clearly defined swollen wheel arches, in which 17-inch alloy wheels are installed by default (expensive versions have 18-inch wheels).

Plus, silver roof rails and protective linings along the bottom of the same color catch your eye, and the line of the side glazing is emphasized with chrome. The stern of the car almost completely repeats the “troika”. In particular, there is a similar wide tailgate and high vertical lamp units.

The interior of the DW Hower H5 () is completely identical to that of its “younger” brother. The interior is fabric by default, and “leather” appears only in more expensive versions. The design of the front panel is dominated by simple lines, and high-quality but fairly hard plastic is used as the main finishing material.

As for the differences between the models, they are only in the color scheme. The interior of the “five” is made in darker colors, while the front panel is decorated with silver inserts, while on the “three ruble” they are stylized “like wood”.

On the sides of the dashboard there are round ventilation deflectors with chrome trim, and in the middle of the clearly defined center console there is a multimedia touch screen. True, the latter is only included in the list of equipment for older trim levels, while in the base version only a simple audio system is available to the driver and passengers.

When you engage reverse gear, the image from the rear view camera is automatically projected onto the 7.0-inch monitor, and the electronics prudently mutes the music during the maneuver, allowing the driver to fully focus on the road.

The multimedia in the car is “omnivorous” - you can connect various devices to it using AUX and USB connectors (the latter are located in the armrest). You can control the functionality of the complex not only from the display itself and the key block, but also from the four-spoke multi-steering wheel, but this is only available for top versions.

It is also worth noting the instrument panel: the instrument cluster consists of a tachometer and speedometer with temperature and fuel level indicators located between them, as well as an on-board computer (the initial versions do not have it). Pleasant backlighting and large font make the instrumentation easy to read and convenient for everyday use.

Characteristics

The overall dimensions of the new Hover H5 are 4,649 mm in length, 1,810 in width and 1,735 in height, the distance between the axles is 2,700 mm, and the curb weight is 1,935 kg. The SUV uses an independent torsion bar suspension at the front, and a dependent trailing arm suspension at the rear.

All-round disc brakes, ground clearance (clearance) is stated at 200 millimeters. The trunk volume is 810 liters, but with the backrests of the rear sofa folded down, the size of the compartment can be increased to 2,074 liters.

Under the hood of the Great Wall Hower H5 () there is a 2.0-liter Mitsubishi 4G63S4T gasoline turbo engine, which works in conjunction with a six-speed manual transmission and develops 150 hp. at 4,200 rpm and 250 Nm of thrust, available in the range from 2,400 to 4,200 rpm. The initial version of the City has rear-wheel drive, while subsequent versions have the Part-Time all-wheel drive system.

The fuel tank of the SUV is designed for 70 liters, the declared fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 8.7 liters per 100 km. The maximum speed of the Ash5 reaches 170 kilometers per hour; the company prefers not to advertise the acceleration time from zero to hundreds.

Price in Russia

The new Great Wall Hower H5 SUV is sold in Russia in three trim levels: City, Comfort and Luxe. The price of the Great Wall Hover H5 2019 in a new body varies from 1,299,000 to 1,559,000 rubles.

MT6 - six-speed manual transmission
4WD - all-wheel drive

On the suburban highway, another feature emerged. When moving evenly, sometimes the question arose: “We don’t seem to be dragging along, but everyone is overtaking. Where are they going?." We compared the readings of the standard speedometer with those on the GPS receiver we took with us. It turned out that the error on the larger side is large, especially at high speeds. In numbers, this is expressed as follows - 80 km/h in reality turns out to be 71-72 km/h, 100 km/h - 90 km/h, and 110 km/h - 95 km/h.

The 2.48 gear ratio makes downshifting very efficient, and the “short” first stage in the gearbox further enhances this feature. You can crawl uphill at a snail's pace at idle without touching the accelerator.

On the battlefield

Hover H5 is an SUV that has a Part Time all-wheel drive scheme, that is, the torque is constantly transmitted only to the rear axle. Driving in all-wheel drive on hard surfaces is undesirable; this will lead to accelerated wear of the tires, main pairs and transfer case. At the same time, remembering that it is advisable to switch to a 4x4 scheme in advance, when entering the training ground, the first thing we do is turn on the all-wheel drive with the corresponding button on the dashboard. Although many modern SUVs allow all-wheel drive to be engaged when driving at low speeds, we did this at a complete stop. This avoids additional loads on the switching mechanisms.

During the descents and ascents of the training ground, the “lower” also attracted special attention. Its connection is only permissible in advance and when the car is completely stopped. The 2.48 gear ratio makes downshifting in the Hover H5 very efficient, and the “short” first stage in the gearbox further enhances this feature. You can crawl at a snail's pace at idle without touching the accelerator, and the engine will not stall even when driving up a decent hill. Naturally, this same property allows for effective engine braking on descents.

You can immediately feel the beauty of a long-travel gas pedal: with its help you can very accurately dose the torque on the wheels, preventing them from slipping. This SUV really knows how to drive hard, and this is a very valuable quality for someone who often drives off the asphalt.

The suspension is also traditional for this type of car - at the front is an independent double wishbone with longitudinal torsion bars, at the rear is a continuous axle with springs and rods. In addition to the already mentioned energy intensity, this scheme also has good moves. Obviously, the front torsion bar design does not imply a large “span”, however, it has a number of other valuable characteristics: low weight and number of component parts, reliability and unpretentiousness. It is not for nothing that a similar design is used even on armored personnel carriers. But the rear spring suspension on the H5 demonstrates good travel. Even though the concrete “waves” of the landfill are suitable for trucks, the car tenaciously clings to the surface with all four wheels. The Hover does not have a cross-axle differential lock in the rear axle, but we were unable to achieve diagonal suspension. All this allows us to hope that the H5 will not suddenly be immobilized on difficult terrain.

On the “correct” tires (even All Terrain class) the car’s capabilities will increase significantly.

However, with geometric cross-country ability, not everything is as good as we would like. The approach angle is limited by a plastic bumper protruding forward (28 degrees), at the rear by a “spare spare” hanging under the bottom of the trunk and a long overhang (16 degrees), and the ground clearance is not so outstanding 190 mm. When storming slopes, you must also remember about the long wheelbase: the ramp angle is small (19 degrees) and you can “sit on your belly” at breaks in the terrain. However, even in such a situation it will be difficult to damage anything; most of the units from below are “recessed” inside the frame, or covered with thick cross members.

In our case, the ability to test the H5 on slippery soils was limited to tires with a completely road tread pattern. As soon as we drove onto the damp soil after the rain, Hover began to wag its stern and try to slide into any rut, even the smallest one. At the same time, he made no attempts to get stuck and generally behaved predictably. We believe that on the “correct” tires (even All Terrain class) the car’s capabilities will increase significantly.

Here we were able to check the operation of the ABS system. It does not come into operation too late, but provides quite a good and predictable slowdown. At low speeds, the system allows a slight locking of the wheels, thereby reducing braking distances on surfaces such as sand or fine gravel.

Average fuel consumption for the entire time of the almost 700-kilometer test drive was about 11 l/100 km. So Hover also proved to be quite an economical car for its class. The volume of the fuel tank is 70 liters, which with such indicators promises a cruising range of about 600 km on a single fill-up.

The attitude towards cars from China in our country is still wary. However, this Great Wall is quite capable of shaking “public opinion” - in terms of quality and ease of use, it has already gone far ahead of its predecessors. Let the Hover H5 not be a “Chinese revolution” yet. This is still a car for a connoisseur of design simplicity and the classic canons of real frame SUVs. But the next and very significant step in winning a “place in the sun” has been taken.

After all, “Koreans” were also once feared...
