The Chery Tiggo FL SUV was first presented at the Beijing Auto Show in 2012. The previous SUV body was almost a complete analogue of the Japanese Toyota Rav4 crossover. The updated Cherie Tiggo FL SUV received not only a new console, but also a fresh appearance.
The main task of the designers was to refresh the outdated appearance of the Chery Tiggo FL. Upgrading a car body that is beloved by domestic consumers is a very delicate matter, because if you overdo it even a little, you can lose a potential client.
The new body of the Chery Tiggo FL SUV cannot be called a deep restyling. But now the crossover looks noticeably younger. The increased overall dimensions increased the overall length of the car by 105mm. Regardless of the configuration of the Chery Tiggo FL, the ground clearance of 190 mm will please every outdoor enthusiast.
The Chery Tiggo FL salon has also undergone external changes. The sheathing materials used have become noticeably more durable. The shape of the steering wheel has completely changed and has become multifunctional. The aluminum trim and large-scale hub add solidity to the interior.
The basic Standard equipment includes a height-adjustable steering column, electric windows on all doors, power steering, and air conditioning. Despite the modest price, the Chery Tiggo FL is equipped with heated electrically adjustable mirrors, an on-board computer, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, an audio system with controls on the steering wheel and 17-radius alloy wheels. You can buy Chery Tiggo FL in the Standard configuration for 619,000 rubles. In addition to this, the Luxury package is equipped with a sunroof, a modern audio system with a hard drive and a leather interior. The price of Chery Tiggo FL in the top configuration with a 2.0-liter power unit and all-wheel drive is 668,000 rubles.
The characteristics of the Chery Tiggo FL in the suspension remain the same. The suspension design in the updated version has not changed. These are still front MacPherson struts and multi-link rear struts, with additional anti-roll bars.
Safety and effective braking are important in a car. A disc brake system is installed on each of the four wheels. Already in the basic configuration, Chery Tiggo FL is equipped with ABS and EBD systems.
The Chery Tiggo FL crossover comes in two versions: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. It should be said that all-wheel drive can optionally be installed only on the model with a two-liter engine producing 138 hp.
The front-wheel drive version is ideal in urban environments. Sufficient engine power and high ground clearance allow you to overcome most city bumps.
The all-wheel drive Chery Tiggo FL paired with a two-liter engine has a high probability of success. After installing good mud tires, he will not be afraid of any roads. You can safely go hunting or fishing on it.
Thanks to the impressive technical characteristics of Chery Tiggo FL, many Russians fell in love.
In the end, we note the main advantages of the Chery Tiggo FL SUV:
The production of the compact crossover Chery Tiggo was launched in 2005 by the Chinese automobile company Chery Automobile. Chery Tiggo is assembled not only in China, but also in a number of other countries, including Russia. In 2010, the model underwent restyling, during which the manufacturer significantly improved the design of the model, and improvements were also made to the technical component. In 2013, production of the second generation of Chery Tiggo cars began.
Many automotive experts agreed that Chery Tiggo has a lot in common with the second generation Toyota RAV4. But, if you look closely at the details, you can find some significant differences: a different bumper shape, simplified forms of the body sides. As for the technical part, the Chinese manufacturer borrowed the engine for Tiggo from another representative of the Japanese automotive industry - Mitsubishi.
Chery Tiggo has gained popularity among domestic drivers due to its diameter, which is 205 mm. Front-wheel drive modifications are mostly popular, but the all-wheel drive version has remained in the shadows due to its high cost. Under the hood of the crossover you can find the following gasoline power units:
Owners of Chery Tiggo with a 1.6-liter engine leave the following data regarding the amount of gasoline consumed by the car:
Reviews from owners of the Chery Tiggo 1.8 modification are as follows:
Owners of the Chery Tiggo 2.0 modification leave the following reviews regarding gasoline consumption:
Owners of the Chery Tiggo 2.4 modification leave the following notes regarding gasoline consumption:
Chery Tiggo is a compact crossover made in China, on the assembly line since 2006. In addition to China, the model was produced in the Russian cities of Taganrog and Kaliningrad, as well as in Cairo and Turkey. Tiggo is a mass car aimed at undemanding buyers. A budget city car, one of the most affordable in the SUV class. Chery Tiggo is based on the Japanese SUV Toyota RAV-4 of previous years of production. The design of the Chinese car is almost identical to the Japanese model. This can be said about the interior, however, simpler materials were used in its design to reduce the cost. At the moment, a restyled version of the Tiggo FL of the 2013 model is being produced.

To be honest, the updated Chery Tiggo FL is not that new. Similar versions appeared in South America (one of the main markets) last year, and the Vortex Tingo with the same appearance was presented in Russia at the same time. The world premiere of the restyled model took place at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2012.
This is my first acquaintance with Chery. I have long had a desire to duel Duster and Tiggo, and now I have the opportunity to evaluate the “Chinese” and compare, albeit in absentia, with the standard of an inexpensive crossover.
The Chinese scale of Chery's production is impressive. A little over 10 years ago it all began with the modest production of copies of well-known models (Seat Toledo, Daewoo Matiz, etc.). Today the plant produces an impressive 900 thousand cars per year, and the production area in China alone occupies 4.41 million square meters. m. In total, the company includes six automobile plants and 11 assembly plants around the world, including Italy.
Judging by the presentation, the Chinese are not shy about relying on expats and Western technological processes. World-class companies help Chery conduct market research, organize work process and plan. The production is equipped with modern equipment from all over the world (USA, Japan, Europe), automatic quality control. European specialists are also present in their own test center where crash tests are carried out, the Institute of Automotive Engineering and Development, and the Central Research Institute in Wuhu, Chery’s hometown. There are also institutes in Beijing and Shanghai. Moreover, the new “premium brand” Qoros was also created by Chery.
So, what has been updated compared to its predecessor? First of all, appearance. Chery FL has been refreshed, new headlights have lensed elements and LED daytime running lights, the taillights have also acquired a bunch of LEDs. The hood, false radiator grille and spare wheel cover have changed, protective moldings and new wheels have been added. The interior has received a significant change. The new Chery interior looks much more modern than before. The center console is combined under a single visor.
The new instrument panel is definitely more visual, but the combination displays only completely uninformative instantaneous fuel consumption. Important data such as average consumption, calculation of mileage until the end of fuel, and outside temperature are not available. Representatives of Chery in Russia complained about the remark, saying that we cannot dictate the will of customers to the manufacturer. This is understandable. Chery’s main sales market, unlike many European and Japanese “colleagues,” is not Russia, but Latin America and China. By the way, foreign buyers are offered more interior trim options: there is a light interior and leather armchairs. True, the quality of the “leather” parts on our sample was below any criticism. Typically, automakers try to put the best materials on the door armrest, because... Tactile contact between passengers and the upholstery occurs most often here. The Tiggo FL has an unpleasant sticky rubber-plastic material on the armrest.
In addition, if you lean your elbows, you can accidentally press the power window button, which is not recessed enough. At the same time, I’m glad that they all have an “auto” mode. Another ergonomic miscalculation is the poor location of the seat heating buttons, hidden from the driver behind the steering wheel. However, if he still uses the key from his hand, then it is not only inconvenient for the passenger - he will have to reach out, but can also interfere with taxiing.
Tiggo FL received a comfortable multifunctional steering wheel in the style of the Honda CRV. True, it is adjustable only by the angle of inclination. Combined with the fact that the backrest tilt is adjusted not by a bolster, but by a jack, and it can only be placed in fixed positions, it is not very comfortable to get behind the wheel. There are also questions about the mechanism that opens the glove compartment: you need to apply significant force to pull the latch, and the microclimate knobs are adjusted with the same tension.
I wasn't pleased with the standard audio system either. Firstly, the sound - either because of the cheap speakers, or because of the “head” - is of disgusting quality, and secondly, the mini-USB socket on the front panel is, to put it mildly, an extraordinary solution. There are no such flash drives, so you can’t do without the mediation of an adapter cord (which you still need to look for). Moreover, the socket takes up the same space as a regular USB input.
Among the excesses is an interior mirror with a useless compass, altimeter and barometer. This set is, of course, impressive, but why does the average city driver need it? An outright anachronism, given that most drivers now use smartphones with built-in navigation, and the part that doesn’t is already able to find out where north is, for example, by looking at the moss (just kidding).
Rear-seat passengers don't feel cramped, with plenty of headroom and legroom. The interior can be easily transformed. It was a little confusing that the trunk door opens towards the side of the road, not the road. And after washing, we found dried dirt on the fifth door, which in winter would definitely accumulate and freeze there.
Despite the presence of ABS with brake force distribution, the brakes were not very impressive. I would like more efficiency. Both in normal modes and on a country road, the suspension is very comfortable, but its energy intensity is inferior to the Renault Duster. If you don’t slow down on potholes, it’s not difficult to achieve a rebound. By the way, the Tiggo’s suspension itself is completely independent and, according to statements, was tuned by Lotus specialists. We managed to drive a little on a dirt track, and the behavior of the car in extreme conditions turned out to be predictable and understandable. Pass!
I assume that the main budget went to him. The SQRE4G16 power unit, replicating the Mitsubishi product, has received a number of significant improvements. The diameter and stroke of the pistons have changed, and the compression ratio has increased. The engine received double variable valve timing and variable intake tract length. The work on it was carried out by the Austrian company AVL. Thanks to this, it was possible to remove 126 hp. Not a bad result for a naturally aspirated 1.6 engine. True, when moving, these “horses” are not very agile. If the speedometer is more than 60 km/h, acceleration loses vigor. By the way, a CVT with virtual gears is also promised in the near future. Unfortunately, it was not on the test, just as there were no all-wheel drive cars.
Another disadvantage is mediocre sound insulation. Despite the fact that the inside of the hood is lined with noise-absorbing material, it is of little use. At idle, the engine rumbles like a diesel engine. When driving, noise is added in the wheel arches, then in the pillars. Plus, in our car the speedometer drive cable squeaked unpleasantly. I don’t even remember where I heard this last time. Judging by the reviews on the Internet, the predecessor was also guilty of this. Additional sound insulation is standard procedure for the Tiggo owner.
The most anticipated all-wheel drive version was not on the test, and it’s stupid to go off-road with front-wheel drive, even despite 190 mm of ground clearance. If we're talking about off-roading, I'll add that behind the large air intakes there are radiators that are not covered by anything. An unsuccessfully flying stone or branch on a country road can easily damage an expensive part.
Independent experts have not tested the Tiggo FL, but its predecessor has been subjected to crash tests several times. In Russia, tests were carried out by the magazine “Vnedorozhnik”, and the results were disappointing. However, representatives say that they only recognize independent experts, for example, Euro NCAP and the Chinese equivalent of C-NCAP. Because Chery is not sold in Europe, the first one did not test the car. C-NCAP beat Tiggo, but I couldn’t get the results, but I found the results of the Australian equivalent of ANCAP. We tested the car in 2011, as in our version, the Chery J11 had two airbags (I note that for other markets there are versions with side curtains that cover the entire perimeter of the window opening). In conclusion, the experts noted that the power structure of the salon had lost its integrity. Excessive displacement of the pedal assembly was also present. There is a possible risk of injury to the driver's chest and ankle. In the end, the Chinese were given only two points out of 16 (see full report).
Considering that the “donor” of the Chery Tiggo is the second generation Toyota RAV4, which has long been discontinued, the demand is corresponding. At our presentation it was not announced what work was done in the field of passive safety in relation to the previous version, so we can only hope that there was some work and the new version is stronger.
The first Cherry Tigos rolled off the assembly line in 2005. Crossovers for the Russian market were produced in China and here in Russia - until 2008 at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad, and since 2010 at TagAZ under the name Vortex Tingo. The prototype was the second generation Toyota RAV4 SUV. Licensed Mitsubishi power units were placed under the hood.
Chery Tiggo, thanks to its low price, is in good demand in its class. How the crossover will behave in terms of reliability in the future certainly depends on operating conditions and proper maintenance. But there is one thing... Among other things, chance also plays a significant role. In addition to “pedigree” diseases, there are also unforeseen ones - those that suddenly arise. As a result, under the same operating conditions, someone drives and knows no troubles, while others torture themselves by eliminating endlessly pop-up faults. Therefore, owners have mixed opinions about this car. It is also worth adding that the native Chinese assembly is of higher quality than the Russian one.
The Cherry Tigo crossover was equipped with gasoline engines with a displacement of 2.4 l / 130 hp. and 1.8 l / 132 hp A little later, 1.6 l / 119 hp appeared. and 2.0 l / 136 hp
Some Tiggo owners with a 2.4L engine have encountered unpleasant cases of valve breakage and connecting rod destruction. The engine is prone to “wasting” coolant through the lower radiator hose, the junction of the pump with the thermostat tube, or through the tube itself. Sometimes the plugs in the cylinder block “leak”.
The 1.8 liter engine is characterized by difficulties with cold starting in severe frosts - below 15 degrees. The culprit is the coolant temperature sensor. Less commonly, the cause is “tired” ignition coils. Reduced traction and jerking at low speeds are often caused by a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor.
1.6 L and 2.0 L engines do not suffer from “nominal” sores. But they are not without common problems characteristic of Cherie Tigo.
Many people complain about the unsatisfactory quality of the working fluids used in the power unit. In particular, the coolant on Russian-made cars can form sediment over time, which often leads to the thermostat getting stuck in the open position.
Due to a malfunction of the fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator, the engine begins to stall and stops starting the first time, and then refuses to start at all when the fuel remaining in the tank is less than half or 1/3. So that trouble does not take you by surprise, especially savvy people carry with them “NZ” in a volume of 5 liters. After a small portion of fuel, the engine starts easily. This behavior can be observed closer to 100,000 km. The harbinger is a slow reaction of the speed arrow to pressing the gas pedal. The original fuel pressure regulator rarely lasts long and its reliability is very low. “Masters” advise installing a fuel pressure regulator from a Volga or Lanos. Car service workers do not recommend cleaning the fuel pump mesh, since in 90% of cases the RTD then fails.
Ignition coils and high-voltage wires can “die for a long time” after 30-50 thousand km. Drivers often notice a jerking sound when accelerating in 2nd gear. In search of a solution to the problem, you have to deal with replacing the fuel filter, spark plugs, coils, high-voltage wires and even ECU firmware. But this does not always end in a positive outcome.
The fuel level sensor soon begins to “fib”, and then completely puts the indicator needle to zero. The reason is wear of the lamellas.
The manual transmission is not highly reliable. The life cycle of the box is accompanied by noises, crunches and rumbles. Problems with switching appear at 40-80 thousand km. There are known cases of destruction of the suspension and secondary shafts.
On cable-driven gearboxes, the gear selector lever may “stick” due to melting of the cable jacket located too close to the exhaust manifold. The problem occurs on Tigo with 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines. On a Tiggo with a 2.4 liter engine, problems with gear shifting may occur in winter - due to moisture getting into the cable jackets or under the corrugation of the gear shift mechanism.
The clutch often “runs out” after 70-90 thousand km, but there are also “lucky ones” who drove 150-160 thousand km before the first replacement. Dealers ask about 10 thousand rubles to replace the clutch; you will have to pay about 7-8 thousand rubles to a third-party service.
Not everything is going smoothly with the DP0 automatic transmission, which Tigo received as a gift from Renault. So, with a mileage of more than 30-40 thousand km, a gear with an exclamation mark is displayed on the dashboard. In this case, slight tremors may appear. The reason is pressure modulation valves. The valves will either have to be replaced, or you can get away with flushing the valve body. The cost of the valve is 2-2.5 thousand rubles, and replacement work is 4-6 thousand rubles. “Officials” ask for up to 80-90 thousand rubles for repairs.
On cars older than 3 years, the transmission may not switch to “P” (parking) mode due to the destruction of the fragile tip connecting the cable and the gear selector lever. Over time, corrosion appears on the contacts of the box connector comb.
All-wheel drive versions of the Chery Tigo, released before May 2008, were annoying with noticeable vibration in the speed range of 60-100 km/h. The reason is improper balancing of the driveshaft. The manufacturer managed to overcome vibration by moving the electric coupling to the rear gearbox and installing an outboard bearing in its place. CV joints, internal and external, often require replacement after a mileage of more than 70-90 thousand km.
The crossover suspension has an average service life. The struts and bushings of the anti-roll bar require replacement at 40-60 thousand km. Front and rear shock absorbers begin to leak or knock after 60-100 thousand km. The silent blocks of the levers are also suitable at this time. With a mileage of more than 100 thousand km, the rear springs weaken.
Steering rods last more than 40-70 thousand km. The steering rack may knock or leak after 60-90 thousand km. There are also problems with the power steering pump - it leaks in the area of the sensor.
After 60-90 thousand km, the rear brake caliper guides often become sour. Questions also arise about the ABS unit, which begins to “glitch”. A new unit costs about 30 thousand rubles, but its repair is not expensive. A glitch in the ABS unit can also be caused by moisture getting into the contact block on the module.
The paintwork on the body is tolerable. The metal at the site of the chips soon begins to “bloom.” Problem areas are the hood, sills, and the bottom of the rear door. When driving over bumps, the door locks often sound. The disease is treated by wrapping the staple with electrical tape.
Whole colonies of crickets settle in the cabin. The front seats soon begin to creak. You can get rid of squeaking by gluing the fasteners. Over time, the paint on the steering wheel wears off.
The stock radio also often causes problems. Either it doesn’t play discs, then it doesn’t hold the wave, then it goes silent, meaningfully displaying the inscription “TOO HOT” - overheating. It is noteworthy that the warranty book states that the audio system is not covered by the warranty.
Over time, the stove fan begins to whistle. After lubricating the bushings, the whistle disappears. If air flows in the cabin in winter are distributed unevenly (the driver is cold, but the front passenger is hot), then the clogged heater radiator will have to be replaced.
In wet weather or after washing, many have encountered complete “silence” of the dashboard. The reason is moisture ingress. After several days of “drying,” the panel’s performance is restored.
Problems with the generator appear after 50-70 thousand km. A new generator will cost 5-6 thousand rubles.
Many owners compare purchasing a Chery Tiggo to playing the lottery. You never know how your car will perform. It is also worth noting that the prices for original spare parts are significantly inflated, and they take much less time to maintain than those that were installed initially during assembly. The resource of analogues is no less than original spare parts.
